Bangkok Airport to Koh Chang: Door to Door
Straight off the plane to your island hotel — meet-and-greet, flight tracking, and the all-important question of whether you will make the last ferry.
Landing at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK) and heading straight for Koh Chang? It’s very doable in a single day — the deciding factor isn’t the drive, it’s whether your arrival time leaves enough room to catch the last car ferry. Here’s how to plan it, what a meet-and-greet looks like, and the one question that matters most. (Only heading into Bangkok itself, not the island? See our guide to getting from the airport to the city.)
The short version: if you land by early-to-mid afternoon you can comfortably make the last ferry the same day. A private transfer with the driver waiting in arrivals is the simplest way — flight tracking, meet-and-greet and the ferry are all built in. Travelling solo and watching the budget? A shared minibus seat works too — our Bangkok to Koh Chang guide compares every option side by side. Land late at night and an overnight near the airport or in Trat is the smarter call.
Can I reach Koh Chang the same day I land?
Usually, yes. The drive from the airport to the Ao Thammachat pier on the Trat coast is about 4 hours, plus the 30–45 minute crossing and the final drive on the island — call it 5 hours door to door. Koh Chang has no bridge, so the ferry is the only way over; since the Centre Point pier closed permanently, Ao Thammachat is the single crossing as of 2026. The ferries run from roughly 06:30 until 19:00 (fewer in low season), so the rule of thumb is simple: if you land by early-to-mid afternoon, you’ll make it comfortably. Tell us your flight number and we plan the pickup around the last realistic crossing rather than a guess.
If you arrive late in the evening, trying to race the last ferry adds stress for no real gain. The town of Trat, about 25 km back from the pier, has plenty of guesthouses from around 400–700 ฿ a night — most people in that situation cross fresh the next morning, and we can arrange the pickup either way.
What the meet-and-greet looks like
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with the bags, and walks you to the vehicle — no hunting for a taxi rank or negotiating a fare. From there it’s a single ride: airport to pier, onto the car ferry with you inside, and on to your hotel. There’s nothing to buy or queue for at the pier because the ferry ticket is included in the fixed price, and you pay the driver on arrival.
Will the driver wait if my flight is delayed?
Yes. The driver tracks your flight and adjusts the pickup automatically, and there’s no surge or penalty for a late arrival — you pay the same fixed price you were quoted. This is the main reason a private transfer beats a fixed-time service for airport runs: delays are normal, and the timing simply flexes around your actual landing.
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) vs Don Mueang (DMK)
Both airports work, but they sit on opposite sides of Bangkok relative to the Koh Chang road:
- Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is on the eastern side of the city — the same side as the route to Trat — so it’s the natural starting point with no detour.
- Don Mueang (DMK) is on the far north side, so reaching the Koh Chang road means crossing past the city first. That adds a small fixed surcharge versus a BKK pickup; the exact amount is shown on the route page and confirmed before you book.
Is flying to Trat faster?
If you’d rather fly the leg, Bangkok Airways runs flights from Bangkok to Trat airport, about 17 km from the pier, typically from 3,500 ฿ one way. Bear in mind it sits on the mainland — there’s no airport on Koh Chang itself — so you still need a transfer to the pier and the ferry across. For most arrivals the door-to-door drive works out simpler and cheaper, but flying is a fair option if your schedule is tight and the fare is good.
Planning your arrival
The cleanest same-day trips start with an early or midday landing. If you’re booking flights and the island is the priority, aim to be on the ground by about 14:00. If your only option lands late, plan the overnight — it’s a far better start to a holiday than a midnight scramble for a ferry that may already have stopped. Either way, send us the flight details and we’ll build the timing around them.
